ICONS :: MURALS :: HOLY PLACES :: DRAWINGS :: ETCHINGS :: STORE

Saint Mary Magdalene is portrayed holding three red eggs. These eggs are symbolic of the Death and resurrection of Jesus Christ from His three-day burial in the tomb. This is the significance of the three eggs besides the obvious Christian symbolism of the Holy Trinity. Often, the icon of Saint Mary Magdalene shows her holding an urn with myrrh as she was one of the myrrh-bearing women at the burial and entombment of The Lord as described in the Scriptures. I've chosen to show her with three red eggs to discern her from the other myrrh-bearing women because of her distinct involvement with witnessing the risen Christ. Besides being cured of her demon possession (The Lord Jesus cast out seven demons from her) and her 'equal-to-the-apostles' status as she was instantly devoted to the Lord's ministry from that day forward, she was deemed worthy of being the first to see the risen Christ, when she fell at His feet, she heard Him say, "Touch Me not." Further, the tradition of the Eastern Church does not indicate that Saint Mary was the 'sinful woman' of the Gospel, although tradition does tie Saint Mary Magdalene to the coloring of eggs as well as the custom of proclaiming "Christ is Risen!" (Christos Anesti) on Pascha. After the Ascension to Heaven by The Lord, Saint Mary traveled to Rome and upon meeting Emperor Tiberius Caesar she offered him a plain egg (symbolizing The Lord's Resurrection) and proclaimed, "Christ is risen!" to which he laughed, saying that Christ rising from the dead is as likely as the egg in her hand turning red, which instantly did.
